Walt Disney Concert Hall

This building was designed by Frank Gehry and was launched in 2003 to supplement the Los Angeles Music Centre.

History

The idea was instituted by Lillian Disney who, to commemorate her Late husband (Walt Disney) and his love for art, donated $50 million to establish a new performance space. This hall is one of the most renowned classy halls worldwide. It was designed to provide familiarity both visually and hearing in its exterior and interior outline.

Architecture

In its construction, more than 6000 panels were used to create the immaculate wall to its external side. The silver sails are used to display the bowed-shaped cornice of the music place hence creating a connection between the new and the old.

Natural materials that allowed daylight in the interior space were used to animate the place and to aerate the place. The natural light was crucial to enhance performances during the day. Gehry envisioned the reception area as transparent and one that is filled with light. He installed massive columns to call up a resemblance of tree trunks.

Materials

They used Douglas fir to act as illumination, space heating, and air conditioning apparatus. They used red oak on the floor and, Alaskan yellow cedar on the stage. The “Lillian” carpet style was used in honor of Mrs. Disney.

Design

The seats are designed to have a hollow side on their base to imitate the human body in the sound reflection. Together with the padded foam on the seats, this ensures that the sound in the hall remains the same despite the number of people in attendance.
