The Broad
The Broad is located in the city square of Los Angeles and was named after Eli and Edythe. These were the two philanthropists who contributed $120 million to found it.
History
Since 2008, Edythe and Eli were actively in search of the best location to start a museum for art collection. After investing in different locations, Eli, in 2010, announced his decision to invest in Los Angeles.
Having not decided on how to structure it, Eli hosted a competition where he had six architectures showcasing their work. He ended up choosing the best and in 2015, partnered by Edythe announced the grand opening that was attended by many people including celebrities.
Architecture
The building was designed with the theme “the veil and the vault”. The veil mainly refers to the building wrapping that was structured to filter and transmit sunlight to the interior space. The vault represents reliable storage, office spaces, and laboratories.
It is a three-story building with two exhibition floors and free space to store new art collections.
Museum Plaza
In 2014, The Broad made a deal with the city to build a plaza that they will supervise and preserve. The plaza has a small forest that is said to have Barouni olive trees, aged 100 years, growing in it.
Why visit
The Broad contains more than 2000 pieces of art from different renowned artists like Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, and Jeff Koons among others. It also functions as HQs for Broad Art Foundation`s allowing borrowing of modern-day works.
Additionally, there are no entrance charges to the museum.
Restaurant
When building the plaza, the museum also included a restaurant which they called Otium. This is a Latin word that means “leisure time”. The restaurant, moving on the same lane of Understanding as the museum, contains a cabinet on the wall that is stocked with fish conserved in formaldehyde.
Management
Funding
In 2014, The Broad had revenue of $200 million which was by far greater than many other museums in L.A. It offers free charges to the public but charges a small fee for special exhibitions.
Governance
Other than Eli and Edythe Broad, the operations of the museum are also overseen by Deborah Borda, Michael Chow, Bruce Karatz, ROBBERT Tuttle, and Irving Blum. All these people work hand in hand to ensure that the operations run smoothly.
Attendance
The museum can hold up to 753,000 people in its vicinity.
