South End
South End is another very popular neighborhood in Charlotte, NC. It is located along South Tryon Street and directly north of Uptown. This area has seen an amazing amount of growth over the last decade. With its close proximity to Uptown, it makes this location perfect for both work and play. This town is full of art galleries, luxury condos and homes, as well as many different dining options. South End is also known for its annual festival known as the “South End Art Hop” this event draws over 25,000 people to the south end each year.
The name south end was given because even though it had wanted to be uptown, it could not get past Brooklyn (Stratford). Town planners strategically chose South Tryon as the main axis between ‘uptown’ and ‘south end’. The railroad came through this area in 1852 which led to rapid industrialization, making South End a primary center for heavy industry such as textile mills, tobacco factories, etc. Even though this area has changed a lot over the years, there are still many historical buildings that have been preserved and kept in their traditional state.
With a population of about 57,822 people with a mean average income of $47,514 per month, South End is a great location to live not just for working but also because it offers a high standard of living that can’t be found anywhere else. The current trend in this neighborhood is definitely upscale condos as well as single-family homes built near anything from small business offices to restaurants etc.
Infrastructural developments in South End include renovations of the main street as well as Independence Square, both located on North Tryon Street, renovations at Spectrum Arena uptown, and much more.
South End has a lot to offer, including art galleries, shopping centers, restaurants/bars/pubs etc. A popular destination for many working in Uptown is the EpiCentre, with its nightlife options. Another attraction that draws people from all over North Carolina is the many sports arenas that host premier games almost every weekend of the year.
Finally, South End has many parks and green spaces which can be found all along the waterfront. There is also a new urbanism trend where there are plans to start redevelopment in this neighborhood. If you’re looking for another exciting neighborhood, check out Charlotte Centre City.
