This museum is located in the Miracle Mile neighborhood in Los Angeles. It deals with car and motorcycle collections and exhibitions.

History

The museum was established by Robert E. Petersen and his spouse Margie on 11th June 1994. Robert was a renowned magazine manufacturer before deciding to venture into this sector. It was initially located within the Natural History Museum of L.A. but was later shifted to a store designed by Welton Becket. Six years after operating the store as a department store, Robert saw it fit to use it as a museum. The space allowed the open exhibition of automotive without the fear of goods being destroyed by the sun.

Renovations were done in 2015 and the building was re-designed. It was opened for business on 7th December 2017.

Collections

The 25 galleries in the building hold more than 100 vehicles for display. The special types of cars are stored in the basement, spared for special exhibitions. The building is a three-story building having each floor focus on different gears.

The first floor is set aside for automotive artistry which exhibits a variety of automobiles. The second floor focuses on industrial engineering that showcases the designs, performance, and collaborative teaching exhibits. The displays on this floor include competing, motorbikes, customs, and hot rods. The third floor mainly stores the histories of the vehicles upholding the car culture of Southern California.

Finances

Margie Petersen in partnership with her foundation awarded the museum a gift of $110 million in April 2011. This constituted of cash, part of the museum property that was on tenancy, and vehicles belonging to the Petersen’s.
