History
East Atlanta Village is on the east by Moreland Avenue and the west by Memorial Drive. For a short while, the southern border parallels DeKalb Avenue, then continues south of I-20 and Mayson Turner Boulevard. Until Decatur’s annexation by Atlanta on December 29, 1952, this region was part of Decatur. Many noteworthy inhabitants have lived in East Atlanta Village, including Pulitzer Prize winner Alice Walker, author of “The Color Purple.”

East Atlanta was one of three areas worldwide to receive the All American City Award in 1985. In 1986 it received another award from the National Endowment for the Arts as one of four cities with “exemplary programs” in public art and architecture.

East Atlanta has risen to prominence in recent years as one of Atlanta’s most prominent neighborhoods. It’s also one of the trendiest areas for gentrification, as it’s home to a slew of hip shops and eateries.
